Production Kit Essentials

When I first started as a Production Assistant, I quickly learned how important it is to show up prepared. Over the years, I’ve built my own set kit—testing out what works, what’s essential, and what you can skip. Now, as I work my way up to becoming a full-time 1st AD, I want to share the most reliable production assistant kit essentials that have helped me on set. I’ve listed the top must-have tools first, followed by other items that will make your days smoother as you grow in film production.

Lululemon Athletica Everywhere Belt Bag, Black

Great for storing everything you need and your walkie can clip onto the waist band.

Surveillance Headset

Recently I had my surveillance break on me in the middle of a busy set day. Buy two and keep one in your car just in case.

Silicone Fin Ear Mold

I find that the earpiece that comes with most surveillance headsets is pretty uncomfortable. This is a much snugger, but comfortable fitting ear piece.

Black Sharpies

Always have one on your collar or in your bag. Use them to write initials on water bottles, write on signs or whatever random tasks come up.

Gerber Multi-tool

This has come in handy time and time again. II’ve used it to help cut hanging threads for seamstresses to pulling out staples in the way for art dept and more.

Glove Clips

As a 1st AD I attach my shooting schedule, call sheets and sides to this. As a PA I attached my work gloves or extra callsheets to hand to crew members.

Work Gloves

These are extremely helpful when carrying tables or putting together steel deck. I’d buy at least two pairs in case you misplace a pair. You may be able to find cheaper gloves at your local hardware store.

Aluminum Clipboard with Storage

This is perfect for storing all your paperwork as a 1st or 2nd AD. The legal size clipboard is especially helpful when there are longer call sheets.

G2 Pens

These are my favorite pens for all time. I use them for my own personal paperwork on set.

BIC Pens

I usually have 1 or 2 of these in my fanny pack bag if someone asks. They’re cheap pens so I don’t mind if I get them back or not.

Flashlight/Head Lamp

Great hands-free flashlight perfect for late night wrap outs or night shoots.

Carhartt Tote Bag

One of the BEST bags I’ve ever owned. This is my personal item for every flight and my set bag when I need to bring along my laptop and more items. The only downside to having a tote bag is that having a hands-free backpack is sometimes a better move.

Self-Care Essentials

Sometimes you never know what you’re going to get on set. These are some self-care items I always have on me.

Travel Size Deodorant

This mini deodorant fits perfectly in my fanny pack. Perfect for freshening up mid-day.

Facial Sunscreen

A set medic will always have sunscreen on hand, but this is my favorite facial sunscreen for sunny on-location days.

Lip Balm

My favorite lip balm of all time.
